A product of the great depression and a very poor, working class family, my father worked his way though college. He eventually made his way into pharmacy school and then onto law school, all while supporting a family of six. When I was about ten, Dad started seeing a little extra income from his hard work. He spent almost every extra dime on either a motorcycle or antique car. I grew up working hard every weekend. Cleaning parts, grabbing tools and helping him in every way I could to get these old cars and bikes running. I learned a lot from Dad and I wanted to pass the same things onto my sons.
When my father died, I had to clean out his warehouse. A friend bought one of Dad's best finds, a 1910 Regal Indy racer. The collector had some old bikes in his shop and he knew I was looking for one for my son, so he gave me this K100. It ran a bit, but it was rusted from one end to the other. The tank had more holes than a fly swatter.
As far as I was concerned, this was my son Ricky's project. He did the disassembly and the cleaning. I did the engine work, reassembly and the paint. I was able to find an old tank that didn't have holes, but it did have a lot of dents. Ricky also helped with the sanding and prep. I think he also sprayed the primer and painted the frame. It was a great project and an excellent learning experience for both of us. What did I learn? Patience, of course!
